New and updated fire safety qualifications

by Mark Rowe

After FireQual’s competency-based qualifications — the FireQual Level 3 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Foundation), FireQual Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Intermediate), and FireQual Level 5 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment (Advanced), FireQual between October 2025 and January 2026 will be rolling out new and updated qualifications, regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation (SQAA) .

FireQual’s Qualification Steering Group (QSG), which brings together sector stakeholders and Approved Training Centres, has led the redevelopment to see to alignment with the latest standards and industry requirements. New and updated qualifications are:

  • a Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens.
  • a Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers (BS 5306) – Aligned with BAFE SP101 Scheme requirements.
  • a Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting (BS 5266-1) – Aligned with BAFE SP203-4 Scheme requirements.
  • Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System (FD&A) Suite – updated content aligned with BS 5839-1:2025 and aligned with BAFE SP203-1 Scheme requirements, including:
    • a Level 3 Award in Fundamentals of the Recommendations for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Non-Domestic Buildings
    • a Level 3 Award in Fire Detection and Alarm Design Theory and Regulatory Requirements; Fire Detection and Alarm Installation Theory and Regulatory Requirements; Fire Detection and Alarm Commissioning Theory and Regulatory Requirements; Fire Detection and Alarm Maintenance Theory and Regulatory Requirements; and Fundamentals of the Recommendations for Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Buildings

For candidates looking to start or continue with their development, this will mean:

  • Qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation (SQAA), ensuring recognition and credibility.
  • These qualifications provide quality evidence to support registration with relevant BAFE Schemes.
  • They are designed with input from industry through the QSG, so the content is current, practical, and aligned with regulations.
  • They provide a route for professional development.

FireQual plans to roll out this programme with the FireQual Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens, followed by the FireQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting (BS 5266-1) and the FireQual Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers (BS 5306), with the updated Fire Detection & Alarm System suite.
