Contactless access terminal

by Mark Rowe

Suprema, the access control and biometrics product manufacturer, has launched BioStation 3. That’s a contactless access control terminal for facial recognition.

In addition to facial recognition — the representative contactless authentication method of the post-covid era, the firm says — various other contactless credential options are offered, including QR codes, barcodes, mobile access cards and RFID cards. The product’s body is reduced in size by 47 per cent compared to the predecessor, FaceStation F2. It’s for installation on any door, from small offices to enterprises, the Korean makers add.

Suprema adds that it has adopted the most advanced AI processor — a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) — to provide the facial authentication. BioStation 3 is an edge device that can run AI algorithms locally with an embedded NPU to maximise the performance of the AI engine. Authentication is possible even for faces with various types and colors of masks, hairstyles, hats and glasses, the firm says.

BioStation 3 is certified to ISO/IEC 27001, the international standard for information security management; and is designed to comply with GDPR, the European privacy regulations. The product offers ‘Face Template on Mobile’, an authentication method independently developed by Suprema that allows users to store and manage their facial authentication template on their mobile phone without having to store it in the company’s database.

Suprema Inc. CEO Hanchul Kim said: “BioStation 3 is a product that integrates all of Suprema’s innovative technologies so that everyone around the world can conveniently and safely control and manage all kinds of doors in the post-pandemic world. With BioStation 3, Suprema will set a new standard in access control and provide a unique customer experience.”
