Biometrics Special Interest Group chair

by Mark Rowe

Reliance High-Tech’s chief technology officer Andy Schofield has been appointed chair of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) AI and Biometrics Special Interest Group (SIG).

Set up in 2020, the AI and Biometrics SIG seeks to buil customer confidence in the safe, ethical and effective use of AI and biometrics in the security sector, ultimately promoting the improved protection of people, property and places. Hence development of best practice guides and standards for adoption of AI and biometric technologies responsibly and ethically. The group’s industry-first, government-acknowledged legal and ethical recommendations on facial recognition technology informed the first British Standard code of practice on the topic – Facial recognition technology – Ethical use and deployment in video surveillance-based systems (BS 9347: 2024).

The group consists of members from the security and technology sectors, and encourages participation from all BSIA members, including manufacturers, integrators, and installers. Its meetings cover a range of topics: Schofield’s first meeting as chair (on October 2) covered AI standardisation, the AI Act and a review of the BSIA’s own facial recognition technology legal and ethical guide. Schofield has over 30 years’ experience in the security sector. A member of the senior management team at Reliance High-Tech, the UK security technology integrator since 2014, he has helped steer the company in the development of AI.

Andy Schofield, pictured, said: “I am honoured to accept the appointment as Chair of the BSIA’s Special Interest Group on AI and Biometrics. This group is pivotal in shaping the future of the security industry, as AI and biometrics hold immense potential for advancing security solutions. I aim to encourage thoughtful debate, driving innovation while ensuring the highest ethical standards are met. By working together, we can ensure the UK leads the way in developing cutting-edge, responsible technologies that set a global standard for security.”
